چکیده

We investigate, both theoretically and experimentally, the phenomenon of polarization rotation of a weak, linearly-polarized optical (probe) field in an atomic system with multiple three-level electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) sub-systems. The polarization rotation angle can be controlled by a circularly-polarized coupling beam, which breaks the symmetry in number of EIT subsystems seen by the leftand right-circularly-polarized components of the weak probe beam. A large polarization rotation angle (up to 45 degrees) has been achieved with a coupling beam power of only 15 mW. Detailed theoretical analyses including different transition probabilities in different transitions and Doppler-broadening are presented and the results are in good agreements with the experimentally measured results.

Progress towards fundamental symmetry tests with nonlinear optical rotation

Magneto-optical (Faraday) rotation is a process in which the plane of light polarization rotates as light propagates through a medium along the direction of a magnetic field. In atomic vapors where ground state atomic polarization relaxes very slowly (relaxation rates . 1 Hz), there arise ultranarrow, light-power-dependent (nonlinear) features in the magnetic field dependence of Faraday rotatio...

Optical pumping model of the polarization for the TRINAT experiment

The TRIUMF Neutral Atom Trap (TRINAT) has an active experimental program to measure angular correlations in the decay of spin-polarized K. An overview of our recent progress including a successful run in December 2012 is described in our other report. This report will focus on our progress in developing a better model of the optical-pumping process that polarizes the trapped atoms. Optical pump...

Multi-dark-state resonances in cold multi-Zeeman-sublevel atoms.

We present our experimental and theoretical studies of multi-dark-state resonances (MDSRs) generated in a unique cold rubidium atomic system with only one coupling laser beam. Such MDSRs are caused by different transition strengths of the strong coupling beam connecting different Zeeman sublevels. Controlling the transparency windows in such an electromagnetically induced transparency system ca...

Proposed search for an electric - dipole moment using laser - cooled 171 Yb atoms

We propose an experiment to search for a permanent atomic electric-dipole moment (EDM) using laser-cooled Yb atoms launched in an atomic fountain. A uniform B field sets the quantization axis, and the Ramsey separated-oscillatory-fields method is used to measure the Zeeman precession frequency of the atoms. Laser beams of appropriate polarization are used for preparation and detection in a give...

Nonlinear Faraday Rotation in Samarium Vapor

Studies of the nonlinear Faraday effect (rotation of the plane of polarization in a longitudinal magnetic field) on resonance atomic transitions have been reported in a number of theoretical and experimental papers [1-9]. The nonlinear effect manifests itself at moderate laser intensities in the absence of atomic collisions. It leads to narrow peaks in the magnetic field dependence of Faraday r...
